La Mer The Concentrate has earned itself a bit of a holy grail status over the years. It is a very interesting product and also super expensive. The question is, is it worth its hefty price tag? It was reformulated in 2020 and now for 2022, La Mer has a set of new claims all based around its barrier repair abilities. Here’s what you need to know!

What is La Mer The Concentrate?

La Mer The Concentrate

So if you haven’t come across La Mer’s The Concentrate before, here’s a little recap. It is infused with a super-concentrated form of La Mer’s proprietary Miracle Broth which is present in every one of the brand’s products.

It has been hailed as a skin healer and soother and I have to say, I grab it if I have a burn, if my eczema around my hairline flairs up, or if I have any skin sores or chaffing (more on that later). I also reach for it if I have over-used an active product and sensitized my skin.

Basically, if my skin barrier is compromised, I know The Concentrate will help get it back to normal soon.

  • Minimises risk of chronic irritation, a root cause of premature aging
  • Helps prevent visible signs of aging before they start
  • Powerful environmental protection from Lime Tea Concentrate
  • Acts as a liquid barrier to help skin rebuild its natural barrier
  • Visibly soothes even delicate, sensitive skin

Reformulated in 2020

The product was reformulated in 2020 and given upgraded antioxidant protection. It now offers enhanced environmental protection and defense against free radicals.

  • Provides a double source of strength with pollution defense joining the skin barrier strengthening function
  • New antioxidant / environmental protection against pollution
  • Same velvety formula
  • Still can be used as an everyday soothing serum or as an occasional treatment for special cases

How To Use It

The concentrate can be used in a lot of different ways. I mainly save it for any localized skin problems. I also use a light layer all over if my skin is feeling sensitive due to environmental factors like the sun (which never really happens for me) or wind, or if an active or facial treatment has caused any kind of reaction.

Other uses:

  • A barrier serumover a lighter serum and under moisturizer to help protect and rebuild the skin barrier
  • Seasonal soother – after skiing, or sun exposure, or generally when the skin has been exposed to extreme temperatures
  • Anti-pollution serum – to protect against free radicals
  • Velvety example – apply under foundation for a smooth application and a flawless finish

I like the idea of using it as a primer because it does have a real velvety, soft matte finish and makes the skin very smooth and even in texture.

My Review of La Mer The Concentrate

La Mer The Concentrate
La Mer The Concentrate

The first time I tried The Concentrate, I have to confess, I wasn’t really a believer. It has a siliconey feel (it does in fact contain silicone) that put me off a little. I couldn’t imagine it doing a lot of good to my face.

I changed my mind about it when I first used it on my inflamed and sore scalp / hairline. Within a day, it was completely calm and the irritation was soothed. Then I started to pay attention!

Next, I had a bit of an issue where my sports bra had been rubbing just under my armpit and the side of my boob. It was super order. I put The Concentrate on straight after the shower as soon as I spotted it, and within two days, the sore had vanished, literally without a trace.

I also used it on a burn from my hair tongs, and it took the sting out of it very quickly. I have also used it when I left an acid on my skin too long before neutralizing with serum, and it took down the redness instantly.

When I shared this on social media, I had lots of messages saying that people relied on it to deal with burns and also that it was the only thing that helped with chronic eczema.

Here’s what some of the Instagram beauty community had to say:

As you can see, there’s a firm faith in La Mer’s The Concentrates healing power. It is definitely pricey, but I have to say, I think it’s worth it as your emergency SOS product to always have in your bathroom cabinet.

Another of my favorite products from La Mer is The Eye Concentrate. You can read all about is my La Mer Eye Collection blog post.
